Everyone has the right to an educationCurrently hundreds of millions of children and adults miss out. Not having the chance to read or write, their whole future is affected and they end up trapped in a lifetime of poverty.
There are 80 million children who miss out on primary school altogether, whilst millions more never learn for more than a few months. Almost a billion adults are illiterate.
A basic education is a right inherent to being human. Education is also a means to an end: it is required to ensure all people can live in a dignified manner and participate effectively in society. It also enables human beings to exercise all the other human rights in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In 2000 world leaders made a promise that all children, young people and adults had the right to benefit from an education and that this must be achieved by 2015. These are known as the Education for All goals.
So far, little has been done to meet that promise and without action now the target will be missed.
That’s why we need you to JOIN UP! and remind world leaders about the promises that were made in 2000 to get every child into school.
